Michigan Official to Head Research at Connecticut Department of Higher EducationFor Release: Wednesday, June 16, 1999 HARTFORD, June 16 Jan W. Lyddon, a policy analyst in higher education from Michigan, has been named Chief Research and Information Officer for the Connecticut Department of Higher Education, announced Valerie F. Lewis, Commissioner of Higher Education, today. The Chief Research and Information Officer is one of three top division heads within the Department. Announcing the appointment at an afternoon meeting of the Board of Governors for Higher Education, Lewis stated, "We are delighted to welcome Jan Lyddon to Connecticut. She has extensive experience in research and planning, both in higher education and state legislative circles. Jan will play a key role in conducting statewide policy studies and coordinating our technology initiatives. We very much look forward to her contributions." As Chief Research and Information Officer, Lyddon will lead the Departments research and information management activities which include conducting policy studies, overseeing data collection for state and federal requirements and promoting the use of educational technology. She succeeds Joseph Zikmund II who is planning to retire. Her official start date is August 1. Since 1994, Lyddon has been Director of Planning and Institutional Research for Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. From 1990-94, she was Director of Institutional Research at Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, Michigan. Prior to that post, she was a legislative research analyst in Michigan for 12 years. Lyddon holds a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Michigan, and masters degrees in public administration as well as adult continuing education. She earned her bachelors degree from Iowa State University. She is active in several national research and planning associations and local community organizations. The Department of Higher Education is the administrative arm of the Board of Governors for Higher Education. In addition to systemwide planning and research, the Department approves academic programs and institutions, reviews public college and university budgets, and operates state student financial aid programs among other functions.
