Board of Governors to Meet at UConn
HARTFORD, April 13 - The state Board of Governors for
Higher Education invites members of the UConn community and public to its meeting on Wednesday,
April 26, at the University of Connecticut in Storrs for a conversation about its
priorities and mission.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am. in the Rome Commons Ballroom in the South
Campus Complex. The public is invited to offer comments at the beginning of the session.
The Board of Governors is Connecticuts coordinating and planning authority for
colleges and universities. Its major duties are to:
- evaluate and approve all academic programs and institutions to assure educational
offerings are of the highest quality for students.
- review public college and university budgets, tuitions and expenditures to promote the
most efficient use of taxpayer dollars.
- advocate on behalf of higher educations interests and serve as the states
"information agent" on issues of concern to the public.
Recently, the Board of Governor adopted five priorities to guide its work. These are
to:
- identify the distinct roles of each public college and university system so that each
system complements and does not duplicate the others.
- evaluate how well each system performs on certain measures such as educating students,
ensuring affordability, and promoting economic growth.
- promote technology-based learning to expand college opportunities for students.
- examine remedial activity on campuses, and identify best practices for teaching and
learning.
- Assure that higher educations programs and services are addressing current needs
.
