Gibbs College Closure
|
|
Gibbs College has announced plans to close its Norwalk and Farmington campuses by December 31, 2009. As the state agency responsible for accrediting colleges and universities in Connecticut, the Department of Higher Education is working with officials from Gibbs and other colleges to make sure students currently enrolled at Gibbs are able to complete their degrees. Our agency is monitoring Gibbs’ status by tracking student enrollment, faculty and administrative employment, financial aid, transfer arrangements, and the phasing out of programs as students complete their studies. We also are collaborating with other colleges to facilitate transfer for Gibbs students. At this time, the Career Education Corporation which owns Gibbs College is committed to providing the financial resources to support the school throughout its "teach out" process. This includes the resources needed to maintain faculty, current educational facilities at both campuses, and equipment as well as Gibb’s internship coordinators, and counselors at its Student Success Center and Career Services. Gibbs also is taking steps to counsel students individually. Each Gibbs student will have a curriculum degree audit discussion with an academic advisor or department chair to determine his or her schedule and confirm a graduation date. Part-time students and others unable to complete their programs by December 31, 2009 will continue to receive academic support, and Gibbs officials are exploring alternative arrangements for these students with the Department of Higher Education.
