Alternate Route To Teacher Certification

The Alternate Route to Teacher Certification I (ARCI) and Alternate Route to Teacher Certification II (ARCII) are innovative and exciting programs developed by the Connecticut Department of Higher Education to attract talented individuals from fields outside of education into teaching. The programs are intended for professionals from diverse fields such as industry, government, the military or human services who wish to change careers or those who want to reenter the work force. Individuals who have worked as substitutes, or who have experience as independent school teachers, are also encouraged to apply.

The programs consist of two major parts.  The first part is either a very rigorous 8 week period of full-time intensive instruction during the summer (ARCI) OR a very rigorous 24 week period of part-time instruction on Friday evenings and all day Saturday during the school year (ARCII). (Exact dates of instruction change from year to year - the current dates are shown below.)   The second major part follows the first and is two years of closely supervised teaching in a Connecticut middle or secondary school.
