2008 Connecticut Higher Education Community Service Awards Connecticut’s higher education institutions impact communities through service programs implemented and volunteered by students, student groups and educators. The Connecticut Commission on Community Service (CCCS) and the Department of Higher Education are proud to honor volunteers at the annual Connecticut Higher Education Community Service Awards. Higher Education Commissioner Michael P. Meotti presented five awards to Connecticut college students and staff at this year's ceremony on April 1st. In 2008, 23 Connecticut colleges submitted 66 nominations within the three award categories of Student, Student Group and Special Award for projects led by faculty and staff. Recipients are selected based on their ability to create projects which distinctly help individuals or community groups; incorporate originality and unique approaches to community service; substantially raise student participation; and address community problems. This year’s Student Award Recipients are: Sandro Aguilar, a student at Connecticut College for his work with the Guidance Department at the Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School in New London for improving academic and social performance of local school Latino youth. Jason Budahazy, a student at Eastern Connecticut State University for his outstanding execution of providing meals in the campus dining hall for more than 350 needy families on Thanksgiving Day. The Student Group Award Recipients are: Naugatuck Valley Community College Student Nurses 2008 Community Care’s “Stuff an Ambulance” campaign for collecting items for Safe Haven, a women and children’s shelter for victims of domestic violence. Long Lane Farm supported by Wesleyan University students for sustaining Community Supported Agriculture and providing families, who might not otherwise afford it, access to fresh, locally grown produce. The Special Award Recipient is: Dr. G. Duncan Harris, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Manchester Community College for his work with Alpha Academy mentoring program at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School in Hartford.
