2007 Connecticut Higher Education Community Service Awards Connecticut’s higher education institutions impact communities through service programs implemented and volunteered by students, student groups and educators. The Connecticut Commission on Community Service (CCCS) and the Department of Higher Education are proud to honor volunteers at the annual Connecticut Higher Education Community Service Awards. This year, 20 Connecticut colleges submitted 53 nominations within 3 award categories. Recipients were selected based upon leadership in developing and implementing service projects and engaging in community service resulting in a positive impact on their campus and within the community. Student Award recipients — Megan Hewitt, a future teacher attending Connecticut College for recruiting and training volunteers and helping to ensure the sustainability of the Science Educators Group by writing and receiving a grant for program implementation. – Gavan Meehan, third year student at University of Connecticut School of Law, involved in every community service activity offered at the school and his connections to the Greater Hartford non-profit community. Student Group Award Recipients – Eastern Connecticut State University American Humanics Student Association, for mobilizing hundreds of student volunteers to work with nonprofits in Willimantic. – Yale Undergraduates at Connecticut Hospice, a student-run organization working with Hospice staff to meet the physical and emotional needs of urban patients. Special Award Recipient – Pam Bellows, Public Services Librarian at Northwestern Connecticut Community College, for countless hours and years of commitment, locally and internationally, in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The 2007 awards ceremony recognized volunteers for service completed from Spring semester of 2006 through Fall semester of 2006.
